Jane Yolen and her daughter Heidi Stemple write a book about various bad girls from history.  The authors appear as themselves in comic strip format to discuss each person.  Each chapter starts with a lovely drawing of our female fatale.  The story or description of who the person is and what she did lasts only a few pages.  Then the authors appear in a comic strip adding information about the woman, pros and cons, and almost always a bad joke or pun to end the chapter.

In the chapter about Salome, the authors share her age to be have been only 10 or 11 years old when she danced for her stepfather/uncle.  Was she evil to ask for John the Baptist head on a platter or utterly manipulated by her mother and the adults around her.  Some of the stories are sad about women who have no control over their lives.  Others make you wonder about bored teenagers.  And still others make you laugh out loud of the way the women tricked the men.

It’s a very fast read.

Recommended: Grades 5 & up.
